Design As Catalyst

Alicia Carpousis

I am a multidisciplinary designer who was born in Switzerland and raised in France. I combine product design and my background in visual communication to create tangible objects paired with interactive interfaces. My work currently explores how design and technology can lead to novel tools that facilitate the process of learning new skills for today’s world. My designs engage the user in hands-on and creative activities revolving around well-being.

Alt-Fermentory was designed for amateur cooks who wish to learn how to ferment from Home to improve their diets and be more creative in their kitchen. The kit is composed of a connected thermometer that keeps track of temperature for optimal results and a paired application that provides real time visual guidance during each step of the process for a rapid mastery of new recipes. The temperature can also be monitored remotely so the cook can leave the kitchen when waiting to be notified for the next step. The versatile tool allows the user to create a range of easy and healthy fermented dishes with recipes that are uploaded seasonally on the application. The recipes are composed with whole ingredients that see their nutritional value enhanced when fermented. The kit can benefit from a phone stand while in use, so the application comes with a complementary tutorial for creating a personalized holder from reused domestic materials.
