Curating Contemporary Art (MA)

Jiayi Du is an independent curator and a freelance makeup artist. Her practice explore curatorial strategies that address the imbalance of gender representation in art, the feminist institutional critique and the complexity of feminism. In her dissertation titled “Feminist Curation: Feminist Curator’s Fight Against Patriarchy in Art”, it identifies and evaluates the curatorial strategies that make curating feminist by examining the application or failure to apply them in real curatorial practices.

For her graduate project, Jiayi co-curated Empathy Loading —a new online commission exploring empathetic relationships between humans and networked non-humans, in partnership with Furtherfield. By working on this project, she also reconsidered the meaning of ‘online curation’ and explored its new opportunities in the current situation of COVID-19.

Prior to coming to the RCA, Jiayi obtained her BA(Hons) Illustration & Visual Media in University of the Arts London 2018. She also worked at TRUS PACE (Beijing) and curated an exhibition titled “Yuan” of Qing Dynasty clothing highlight collection.
