Experimental Communication

Kat McGrath

I'm an interdisciplinary designer and researcher working across printed matter, digital platforms, and physical exchanges. I design and facilitate curated spaces that engage with notions of political discourse, educational structures, and performative modes of learning, such as game play. I use alternative, more accessible entry points that seek to find moments of empathy and connection, through humour, provocative dialogue, and equitable exchange.

Over the past two years at the RCA:
I worked on publishing projects including the The Studio, Many People are Typing, and Content-Full.
I lectured at Otis College of Art and Design (Los Angeles), SNAP Inc. (Los Angeles), and Common Vision UK (London).
I collaborated on projects with Migrants in Culture and Instincts.
And, occasionally I wrote for Content-Free

Frequent collaborators include Roland Ross, Max Kohler, and Marnie Hamilton. Drop a line if you’re seeking a chat, a collaboration or an equitable exchange :-)

Experimental Communication

Content-Full is an autonomous printed publication ensuing from Content-Free, Visual Communication’s digital “portal into a world of thinking and making”. Content-Full aims to situate itself outside of the institution, extending the experimental exhibition and testing space to the print realm in the hopes of creating a printed matter that engages with RCA alumni and tutors, stretching outward to resulting networks.

As a result, Content-Full functions as an archive of currency, revealing the topics, thoughts, subjects, works-in-progress, and positions of contributors, while simultaneously creating a library collection that can be referenced by all.

In an evermore digital landscape, and in light of the effects of COVID-19 on the cultural and educational sectors, we hope this printed matter will preserve the urgency of locality, the importance of shared knowledge and practice, and highlight the voices that are contributing to the presence of the RCA, London, and beyond.

Issue #1 was released Spring 2020 at the RCA. Issue #2 will be released September 2020 through Content-Full’s forthcoming platform, and through Sold Out Publishing. In a nod to CF's beginnings, the White City library at the Royal College of Art will receive a copy of Content-Full upon each Issue’s publication.
