Ikebana is a high art, arrangement art. Haute cuisine and some installation art are also arrangement arts. Looking around, everyone in fact arranges items in everyday life. Yet although it’s based on everyday life, ikebana is different from putting a bunch of flower inside a shopping bag. Arrangement art is a ritual.
It builds connections between space, objects and audiences. Space is its canvas, objects the color, people the finishing touch. Different parts create a beautiful balance in relation to one another. Ikebana is my entry point, and I’ve researched and reflected how Ikebana artists build the frame before they arrange flowers, in my handbag designs. I’ve explored the relationships between arrangement art and handbags.
In my project, flowers are as important as the handbag itself, and when my handbags stay at home, they can have an extra function – to be installations, inside of which flowers can be arranged.
