π¨ Only a quarter of students receiving free school meals gain five good GCSEs or equivalent, compared to over half of the overall population.
π¬ I partnered with Feltham Young Offenders Institute to design an inclusive and engaging education system for disadvantaged young people.
π¬ The system is in its third iteration following 2 pilots.
π‘ The outcome is a system that allows students to discover and develop the self knowledge required to define their own learning goals.
π Students work with teachers and mentors to develop and deliver an education programme that supports their goals.
π Responsible education should broaden career prospects so each stage includes a convergence of internal and external motivators.
π The system has been extracted from the Feltham context to create a universal framework for self-determined learning.
π In order to gain a global perspective on education for children from disadvantaged backgrounds I organised a design field trip to India.
π¬ Using the insights I collected from interviews with parents, students, teachers, head teachers, and education consultants I designed a workshop to improve feedback loops between students and schools.
π The workshop has been trialled in two government funded schools in Mumbai, for underprivileged children aged 9 to 11 years old.
π‘ The key activity requires students to think critically about their learning environment and sketch something they would like to see changed. These are then communicated to senior staff in order to create sustainable changes.
