Photography (MA)

My practice is based on the themes of disease and bodies. I sum up my autobiographical experiences into a stage of dialogues with moving images. Working with photography as a base, I also integrate animation, installation, and performance to solidify my visual language. Through my confessional artwork, I investigate the intervention,control and transformation of modern medicine on the corporeal existence. The perspectives in my work rotate from the self to the father figure, to children’s eyes, all angles contribute to the construction of a body-disease conversation. Under the projection of the body as the medium, the aforementioned dialogue conveys my world view on life, body, and illness. Meanwhile, under the umbrella topic of the illness, I also discuses the organic and the inorganic of the body (organic meaning the biological description of the flesh while the inorganic describes the body as a tool under the intervention of the disease). My works around the different individual experiences which consolidates the different changes in the body while examines intimate relationships under the structure of the disease, all by making my experience visible and public. Within the realms of my discussions, I hope for the work to push the boundaries of the marginality of the body, for the work to allow oneself to look at their and others’ body in an objective manner that escapes the ontological. I further wish for the experience of living and the reflection on the mass would help the discovering of the self and its connection with society while reflecting on life itself by doing so.  

I Am Patient
The moving image revolves around my eye disease from a first-person viewpoint. Under the background of the disease, the image narrates the individual's physical and psychological feelings of living with the disease in the form of autobiographical narration. With the gradual loss of vision comes the strengthening of individual subjective feelings, Through my own feelings around the disease, I began to narrate and express my world view under the same context.

My Father Is A Cow
This moving image is about my father's death caused by gastric cancer. With four stomachs, cows are able to remain healthy after cutting off one stomach. People who take care of cows on the farm would also choose to make a hole in the cow's belly. The hole makes cows look like they are in pain to humans, but it can help them become healthier. When cows eat "unhealthy" foods, human beings can help cows extract food that is harmful to them. I juxtapose the image of the cow with the image of the father. On the one hand, the cow echoes the image of the father in my heart. On the other hand, I also hope that people can become cows to avoid death. I combined dynamic images with static photos. In the state of the hospital, the concept of time is magnified. All the time inside the hospital is more static than the time outside. However, the ineffectiveness of drugs, the futility of treatments, the fatigue of people, and the desire to live are always against each other.

This image is about leg surgery as a child and the pattern of my veins visible on my leg since childhood. I completely forgot how to walk after my leg surgery and my muscles were treated medically when I was little. I began to need constant repetitive exercises, repeatedly observing other people's daily routine, I’m much in the state of an infant, trying to regain the ability to walk by imitating again. (Walking and standing are dangerous in terms that I could fall any minute, and walking itself has changed from something natural to something objective.) In such spaces as operating rooms and hospitals, I became a mechanically moving body, repeatedly striving for the subjectivity of my own flesh. The other part is about the texture brought to me by diseases, and the texture of the legs brought by varicose veins. The texture of the disease is "strange" under the initial perception of people. The "strange" feeling is defined as "ugly" under social discipline. I want to redefine "ugly" and "beautiful" or "normal" and "abnormal" with such texture.

A Little Tooth
In this small space of time, I want to return from the external body to the internal body. The voice of the teeth reverberates in the oral environment, and language is generated and dissipated from this semi-sealed space. I want to combine some scenes in my memory, such as counting, tooth extraction, saying “aaa” with an open mouth with imaginary scenes in a form of a diary, reflecting on the estrangement between people about language and narration brought by an oral cavity from the state of privacy and intimacy. Part of the third diary originated from a medical picture with tumors in someone’s mouth. While examining the changes in human appearance caused by the disease, I reflect on the alienation between people caused by the disease.

“he saw the eternal traffic of lots of people, their greeting and parting gestures and facial expressions, people coming in and going out, talking to each other and listening. ”

Through the photos, I would like to talk about the uncertainty of the disease and the precarious state of occurrence at any time, adding with the expression of pain and immediate fears through limbs and organs.
