Curating Contemporary Art (MA)
Sakhi Gokhale
Speculating on the potential of alternative systems of care for and with technology, all artists’ responses, exhibited on the Empathy Loading website, invite consideration of meaningful interactions between humans and machines by developing new forms of intimacy. Launched on 15 June 2020, the website also features alongside artworks, a curatorial statement, newly commissioned creative text by poet and programmer Allison Parrish, artist interviews, recording of commissioned artist Vishal Kumaraswamy in conversation with Zarina Muhammad and a list of references invaluable to the curatorial process. Amina Abbas-Nazari’s speculative listening experience ‘Multiphonic Connections’ is available to view here.
Sakhi Gokhale is an independent Indian artist, producer and curator. Her practice explores online curation and accessibility within institutional and curatorial practices. She is particularly interested in collaborative, cultural and interdisciplinary artistic practices.
Her dissertation titled Virtuality of the Art Institution: Geography, Accessibility and the Digital Divide within Art Institutions and Organisations examines ways in which the online presence of art institutions have traditionally been used and what rethinking the operation of these platforms would entail, via phenomenons such as the 'digital divide' and 'aesthetic education'. And, redefining what it means to experience art through the internet with the use of technology and by challenging cultural capital and geographical situatedness.
For her graduate project, Sakhi co-curated Empathy Loading, a transdisciplinary online art project inquiring into affective relationships between humans and non-humans, in partnership with Furtherfield and contributing artists Vishal Kumaraswamy, Marie Eve Levasseur, Friendred, Elisa Giardina Papa, Allison Parrish, Amina Abbas Nazari and Zarina Muhammad.
Sakhi has previously produced a theatre production under her company - Kalakarkhaana (India), performed as a professional actor for the past 7 years (theatre, television and cinema), exhibited photographic work (Tao Gallery, Mumbai, India) and written a long term column for a newspaper (Sakal, India).
Sakhi holds a diploma in Fine Art Photography from Bharati Vidyapeeth School of Photography and an MA in Curating Contemporary Art from Royal College of Art. She is based in London and Mumbai, India.
