Documentary Animation

Sanjana Chandrasekhar

Sanjana is an animator and filmmaker from India. Her work challenges the traditional methods of documentary storytelling, and she is always investigating the various approaches of the animated form.

Sanjana holds a BA in Illustration from the University of Arts London. Her creative interests originated with contemporary sculpture and fine art, which later evolved into stop motion animation and consequently, the world of moving image. Since 2013, Sanjana has worked as a freelance animator and illustrator, working commercially for clients including Tyrrells, Food Network, and Travel Channel. Her short films have been screened at film festivals including the British Animation Awards, London Short Film Festival, and Factual Animation Film festival.

Documentary Animation

Sanjana is interested in a specific type of documentary filmmaking where she re-interprets and repurposes interviews into a scripted form. She uses animated documentary as a form of ‘re-enactment’, allowing her subjects to participate and engage with the filmmaking process. This approach to filmmaking is apparent in her second year film, which resulted in an unusual but intriguing relationship between maker and subject, as the characters in the film eventually became collaborators.

The main themes that encapsulate her work are intergenerational relationships, social change, queer culture, identity politics, and the social stigmas that prevail in modern Indian society. Through her work, Sanjana hopes to raise awareness about caste inequality and poverty in India, and LGBTQ rights.
