Jewellery & Metal (MA)

Gems, which have been coveted for the past 7000 years, people are eager to have them to bring beauty and identity.Nowadays, we have scientific methods to evaluate the value of gemstones.Traditional gemstone cutting techniques are now following specific guidelines to avoid natural defects and colour changes. However, I believe that it is these inclusions in the gemstones that make each individual stone unique, more exciting and valuable. When I look at the colourful structures inside a gem, the existence of inclusions is as beautiful and moving as the cosmos.

In RCA, I challenged the traditional gem identification system, used my expertise to create a new inclusion gem identification system, and led people to pay attention to this field through special cutting methods. I want to make people realize that inclusions are also valuable, sometimes even more than the stone itself.

Through the use of special cutting methods for gemstones containing inclusions, special effects can be achieved to attract the viewer’s attention. After all, people are always attracted by beautiful things. I worked with specialised craftsmen to develop mirror cuts that reflect the inclusions, forming a special visual effect. My inspiration comes from the unique starlight effect of gemstones.

In addition to continuing my exploration of stone-cutting methods, I am in the process of researching various methods to express my interest in a contemporary gemstone.

Jewellery Magnifier Rhino Model — Rhino Model Work in progress

See My Soul — Range: Jewellery Magnifier Size: 30x20x15mm Materials: 925 Silver, Rock Crystal with Inclusions

In the four years of studying gem identification, the jewellery magnifier as a tool often helps me to determine the clarity of gem.
This reminds me that the jewellery magnifier is perhaps the most intuitive and simple way to let more people see the inside world of gemstones.
Here, I replaced the glass lens on the jewellery magnifier with the crystal containing inclusions and let the jewellery magnifier as a medium to lead people to intuitively feel the charm of inclusions.

Rock Crystals often contain needle-like or sheet-like inclusions. I wonder if we can cut them so that they can also present a visual effect similar to the starlight effect? Through extensive iterative research with specialized technicians, we developed a single cutting method and used the created surfaces to reflect the inclusions inside the gem, a bespoke Mirror Cut. This cutting method has very strict requirements in terms of position of the inclusions inside the stone, overall cleanliness and cutting methods of gemstones.

Memory Palace-Silver — Range: ring
Size: 30.5x29x31mm Materials: Sterling Silver, Rock Crystal with Green Mica

Inspired by the kaleidoscope, fragmentary reflections and castles in the game “Conan Exiles”, the ring “Memory Palace” is a minimal palace of memory, vision, self reflection and exposure to the universe. The hexagonal stone with inclusions is full of imagination and surprises. The human self is like the inclusion in the universe, trying to break away from the memories, but constantly being reflected by the fragments of “self” and “non-self”.

Symbiotic Stone-Red — Topaz,Red Tourmaline Through the method of inlaying a precious stone inside another lower value stone, I am currently in the process of creating new kinds of gems with “precious inclusions”.

Symbiotic Stone-Green — Topaz,Green Tourmaline

Symbiotic Ring Rhino Model

Symbiotic Ring Rhino Model — I am not satisfied with the presentation of an individual stone placed on a ring. With this "symbiotic" ring, the gemstone is effectively wrapping the gold ring to fuse the two as one entity. Only one connection point is the characteristic of this ring, and the stone surface will show special effect.

In parallel to my research on the cutting and faceting of gemstones with inclusions, I developed new artificial hybrids of metallic and mineral inclusions with natural gemstones. Combining image cutting with the layering of various gems, these symbiotic stones offer a range of visual and emotional effects unseen until today.

In this project, I hope to establish a new identification system for inclusion Gemstones. Combined with my professional knowledge and referring to the certificates of some internationally renowned appraisal institutions, I have conceived the design of certificates related to inclusion gems. In the future, I hope to cooperate with gem appraisal laboratories to issue professional certificates and establish an official appraisal system for inclusion gems.
Here I show some examples.
