4. Interior Futures

In the past two years of study, I have been committed to how to make people more intimate and natural coexistence with space, increase the initiative of space and people's immersive experience in space. By using different materials in the same space and painting them in the same colour, it can better let people get close to the material and feel the difference between them. What I’d like to achieve is to let the immersive experience and sensory space better integrate into the fast-paced social life of today, especially in difficult times. During this uncertain period nowadays, everyone sames to be in anxiety. Could we could somewhere where people could address and deal with uncertainty and change perception of it? That what this project focus on. 

This project Sensory Market is located in the East Smithfield Market, itself a site of uncertainty; with Crossrail arriving, the Museum of London relocating to the West Smithfield Market and the meat market itself being relocated. A repurposed marketplace – somewhere to find spatial therapy.

The programme negotiates the structure and grid of the existing building creating a series of zones, each designed to meet specific feelings such as jealousy and anger and offering spaces for contemplation. At the heart of the structure is a meeting place offering a space for events and market pitches. The sequential experience through the zones is designed to offer multiple routes for the visitor with several entrance and exit points allowing shorter or longer visits and emotional journeys prescribed and/or discovered.

The design of each zone has been developed to communicate its purpose with the visitor. The spatial, material, atmospheric and temporal qualities of each zone have been considered to do sp. Correlations between geometry and scale, relationships with the existing context, material properties, temperature, humidity and acoustic quality create each zone’s atmosphere. Prescribed actions such as fixed view points, climbing walls, jumping surfaces, lagoon type pools are inspired by emotional idioms and from readings into the cognitive sciences. Thresholds between zones are treated as sensory transitions and places of exit and entrance are considered integral to the journey.

East Smithfield Market Interior Structure and Dimension — We all suffer from uncertainty and unpredictable future, especially based on nowadays condition during the period of pandemic. And uncertainty lives every second around us. So, I focus on different kinds of mental health conditions on uncertainty such as Anger, Anxiety, Stress, Loneliness and so on. Because these are the most common emotions that everyone could generate every day. As for uncertainty, since we all have it, could we create spaces that are designed to exercise our emotions and to address and deal with uncertainty? Or could public spaces be designed to play a therapeutic role in how we deal with our mental wellbeing? The site is in East Smithfield Market in Clerkenwell with river fleet goes right underneath the site. The reason for choosing here as the site is that when I was looking for a site I found it has the sense of uncertainty happening there. There are lots of things going on the site. First is Museum of London is moving to westside of the market. Second is that crossrail's construction is on site of it. Third is that it's a transition into several neighbourhood including Farringdon, Barbican and Clerkenwell and with the meat market itself being relocated. And also Smithfield Market used to be a meat market which sold live cattle and horses since 18 century, and it had been changed into a “dead” meat market since 1868. And now with the meat market relocating too. It’s a rectangular shape in a dimension of 95 metres* 75 metres with a height in 16 metres. It will take people 2mins to walk through by its long side and 1 min and a half by its short side.

Map of Sensory Market and Space Division — As for the space division, one is healing space which includes a market place and lagoon area. The other one is emotional space which includes anger zone, jealousy zone and silence zone.

Market Place — Market place is located in the centre of the Sensory Market, which has different small pop-up plant market doing botanical research, exhibition and selling, and is a space that brings nature into the historical reused interior, where people can enjoy the multiple sensory experiences of sight, smell, touch and taste, including varieties of activities such as appreciation, purchase, communication, tasting, mental and physical relaxation. It includes Pop-ups, Plant Bar, Central Garden, and also people could have intimacy interactions with people swimming in the water. And greener can bring more vitality to the market and is a symbol of life recovery, to take advantage of characteristics of plants and bring into the market is a way to achieve the goal.

Anger Zone Section — Anger zone is a space where people can vent and release their angry emotions through actions and behaviours, which makes them feel that the positive effects of anger can promote the functioning of the body and release bad emotions.

Anger Zone Interior View — All of area in this space provide people with energetic and enthusiastic interactions. When we are able to experience angry feelings and are comfortable with them, we become stronger and more self-possessed.

Silence Zone Section — Silence zone is a space where people learn to celebrate themselves individually or in a small group of people, where you can be alone in the crowd, and space that allows contemplation, meditation, lying down, self-reflection and so on.

Silence Zone View — Here's a cut out in the middle of the roof letting natural light go through into interior creating a space for people to relax with sunlight.

Jealousy Zone Section — Jealousy zone is a space where people could sit or lie on the ground watching people swimming in the other side of the pool and enjoy fresh air in interior. And it includes Mirror Corridor, Under Water Theatre, Nature Terrace, and Greenery Space.

Mirror Corridor's View in Silence Zone — Space for jealousy is stimulating people to have a strong desire to continue to the pool and stimulating the generation of ambiguous emotions. People can both accept the generation of jealousy in daily life and enjoy the interactive experience being with others in jealousy.

View in Lagoon — Lagoon is a place where after several different emotional journeys, people could socialize and congregate in, and where intimate contact with water could release stress and negative emotions.

Plan — To sum up, Sensory Market is a place which has a holistic feeling of healing and where people could come to address uncertainty in. It’s aiming at altering our adaptability on common sense challenging perception of uncertainty making it more acceptable and combining healing and relaxation experience together.

Uncertainty is inevitable. How we deal with it collectively and individually varies for each of us throughout our lives. This thesis speculates that internal public spaces could be designed to play a therapeutic role in how we deal with our mental wellbeing. Could we create spaces that are designed to exercise our emotions? Could this be a programme funded as a primary healthcare site in the future?
