Yixin Flora Huang
Yixin (Flora) Huang (b.1997, China) is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Glasgow School of Art, where she received her Bachelors in Fine Art Painting and Printmaking with Honours. For her degree show work EXUVIATION (2018), she was awarded a place in the Royal Scottish Academy's New Contemporaries 2019. While at the Royal College of Art, she also earned a four-week residency at the Slade School of Fine Art, which culminated in an exhibition shown at both the Slade and Camden Art Centre.
Her work explores what it means to be human, the arbitrary lines we define ourselves by and what separates us from non-human animals and machines, delving into ideas of post-humanism. Using a variety of mediums such as film, contemporary dance, music and poetry she aims to create a feeling of dissonance within the viewer, magnifying their capacity to feel and challenge their long-standing assumptions. Her work leads the audience to question everything that exists beyond the rational self.
Following years of studying feminist theory, the subjects I explore in my art practice have slowly shifted from those of gender equality and gender dualism to the definition of dualism itself. I was particularly drawn to filming gesture-based videos to represent the duality of the body and its movement. Through contemporary art dance style, the performers convey intense animalistic freedom, while retaining a dreamlike grace - a pure expression of emotion through gesture. Via this concept I looked to focus more on the raw dynamism of human movement and less on the body itself.
