Statement

Before starting my MA in Womenswear at the RCA, I worked casually within a tailors in the north of England, Liverpool to be exact. Observing and understanding traditional methods, lead me to appreciate traditionalism and the art of craft, something which has almost died.

I have always had a negative attitude towards the ideology of anti-fast fashion, but never truly understood how I could challenge the direction in which our industry has headed into. After asking questions upon questions to the tailors who I worked alongside, I began to understand the methodology behind well crafted clothes, built for longevity, but most importantly to feel great in.

Understanding the psychology behind tailoring, is something I had never come across before. Observing how a sharp cut can change a posture, an attitude or even give the body an illusion through the art of construction.

These are all things I wished to experiment with. Itching to start my MA, I took the basic knowledge that I had to grow into my aesthetic. I begin to develop an identity of clothing that with-olds the juxtaposition of bespoke tailoring, with everyday wear, built for longevity that make people feel confident. The historic reference of my work also contains a modern sense of value within its eco-conscious outcome, using dead stock material from high end Haute Couture houses, wool from local english mills,First Aid World War 2 and thread and dog fur waste. Bringing history into the contemporary is something that has been lost within fashion.
