Narrative Animation
Dermot Lynskey
My name is Dermot Lynskey and I’m a film-maker from Dublin, Ireland. My animated films have been shown in festivals such as: Annecy, Glas and Melbourne International Animation Festival. I graduated from the Film School of Ireland (2015) and The Royal College of Art (2020) both focusing on Animation. Before attending the RCA I worked as an animation editor on shows for Disney, Adult Swim and RTE. All I want to do is watch and create films so hopefully I can continue to do it forever. Cheers, G’luck.
When I applied to the Royal College of Art back in 2017, I had the intention of continuing my transition from primarily using 3D software to create work into a mix-media, stop-frame, handmade animation style. I found the 3D software difficult and I gravitated towards a more tactile form of animation which I could express the intended tone and humour in my work. In my first year at the RCA I finished a short film called ‘Wartime, sometime.’ which was screened in the WTF Films selection at Annecy Film Festival (2020). For my final year project my intent was to create the film ‘in-camera’ and to stop my reliance on using post-production software such as aftereffects. Unfortunately because of the COVID-19 outbreak I was forced to leave London and return home and was unable to bring the equipment needed to finish my short. I put the film on hold and created an entirely new project. I decided this new project would be a surreal look at the impersonal nature and mundanities of modern communication.
A Very Short Film.
A mix-media animation using 3D, 2D and Liveaction. It is meant to be viewed on a smart phone in portrait mode, but its also fine if your sitting in front of your computer.
