Knitwear

My practice is driven by a fascination with real connections and the relationships between people and objects. My work reduces each garment to its own bespoke narrative using an instinctive design process. Led by feelings rather than following a predetermined route or pattern, this work is about storytelling, and investigating the nuances of discreet beauty within the everyday.

Draw. These drawings were created by classmates in response to a story reading of mine.

Touch.

Gentle and considered gestures define Eleana’s practice. A moment of presence is captured within each knitted piece, being driven by a fluid knitting process whereby the structures and details are dictated not by a conventional pattern but by a reaction to a story, drawing or particular moment in time. These decisions are not recorded and cannot be remade. There is a conversation between freedom and technicality; structures affect one another and form organic shapes when worn on the body. Real consideration and appreciation for materiality drives this process; each yarn chosen instinctively, but with the acknowledgement that this instinct has meaning. Placing knitted viscose alongside sheet rubber creates a graceful juxtaposition: the rigidity and weight of one against the sheer fluidity of the other. The way these materials behave and interact with one another has allowed for silhouette and drape opportunities that the knit alone could not provide. Details are reduced and intricate. Intentional lace holes feature within each panel, made not only as a coding system but as a road map to a thought process. A subtle story is being told in the execution and assembly of each piece. Much like the way that a boat is sailed, altering tension to adjust efficiency.
