Yanyun Yang

Every part of social public space is able to show people's spiritual world, convey various social information to the public, and also reflect social emotions, with broad inclusiveness and unlimited adaptability. As the owner of the public space -- the audience, is often marginalized in the process of creation. Therefore, my works focus on the needs of the society and the audience, try to present the maximum "publicity", and increase the audience's fullness through their participation and dialogue.

Instead of using media technology and virtual reality to arouse strong resonance among the audience, my works focus on exploring the intuitive feelings that different materials bring to participants in the spatial environment. I hope my design can allow people to have their own unique experience, and also allow them to examine and think about these social phenomena.

We visited Romancetown

Constantly swiping through Tinder? or speed dating to meet your true love? In this time-poor society, people seek convenient modern solutions to find love, which blurs the stages of dating and makes it become more and more unromantic.

In this project, I have explored the definition of romance in 2020 by focusing on the moment when romance can naturally occur. I divided the dating process into eight different stages: encounter – meeting - first date - first kiss - first sex – breakup - negotiating and marriage. Each of them happens in a specific place and tells a story about certain kinds of couples.

Romance is a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love, and also romance can be surprising, it can happen in unexpected moments and places, no matter how ordinary the circumstances are. In order to create this romantic feeling around two people, I designed in a subtle and light way, without disturbing the original context. In these eight scenarios, I have modified the existing objects to facilitate a more natural romantic progression. Only slight changes in material, texture, light or distance are made, however the human experience turns out to be totally different.

The design inspiration comes from consent and the behaviours caused by it. Romantic dating doesn't mean that only romantic things will happen, there are also experiences around consent, together making a relationship fair and complete. Consent is about intimacy, but also negotiation, it requires the participation of two people, both of whom have the same right to decide. In the designs, I have used the behavioural aspect to show my understanding of the word and also explored its possibilities in a romantic setting.

Each of the stories allows people to connect emotionally or even arouse their imagination about the possibilities of romance in 2020.

Does romance still exist in 2020?

Here are some unromantic moments in the process of dating today, it seems that most people are short of time, so they look for convenient and modern solutions to find their love, which blurs the stages of dating and makes it become more and more unromantic.

Encounter is an unexpected meeting with someone, it can happen anywhere, here I set the scene on the escalator.

In this project, I highlight the moment when two people pass by each other by changing the original spotlights under two escalators running opposite directions, so only when two people happen to be walking in the middle of two escalators at the same time ,can both of them be in the light and notice each other.

Only a simple change is made, which is replacing the original spotlight with a high-powered one. The area that is lightened by is in the tone of warm yellow which can give people a nice appearance.

Meeting is not only a part of the dating process, but also a part of our daily life. People meet each other based on different purposes, which means the distance between them is also different. In order to express that through spatial language, I used the architectural element, column, of corridor.

In this project, I divided the ways of greeting into waves, shout, eye contact, smile and handshake. Each of them happens in a certain distance, the words on the columns which can work as an instruction make these distances visible.

The columns are arranged in a curved line so that people can see the words on them in advance as they approach, the letters are hollowed out on the metal and light inside the column can highlight the word, making it easy to be noticed.

First date is about communication and getting to know each other, which means that people on a first date need a space to spend their time together. Here I set the scene on the fire escape.

In this project, I focus on the material by changing the metal handrail into a rubber one, applying rubber coating to the original steps, and also, replacing the metal mesh with a net, so that everything in this little space is made of soft material.

When people go up the fire escape, they will feel the texture of the handrail and stop at the yellow steps, also they can lean against the net which will bulge outward, making it an intimate space for just two people to stand or sit together.

First kiss makes people feel romantic, and also somehow flirting, this feeling can also appear when people hide behind fabric and become partly hidden and partly visible. Here I set the scene in the laundry room.

However, it doesn’t mean that only romantic things are involved in this behavior, when we kiss each other, it requires the consent from both people. To explore the possibility of consent in a romantic setting , I made the ceiling mounted drying rack with pulley system, it works the same way as the rolling blind, people on either side of the hanging clothes have the same right to control the rise and fall of it, which shows the meaning of consent by using spatial language.

The distance between each drying rack is 500mm, which creates a quite intimate space for two people to be together.

Sometimes the workplace is not strictly about business. According to the result of a survey, around 10 percent of employees admit to actually have sex in it. Of all the rooms in the office, storage room is a place that staff do not often go to,so what will this organized room be like when people have sex in it?

People who want to have sex in the storage room need some things to hide behind, so based on the structure of shelving units, I designed a screen which can be pulled out from the middle of two shelves.

The screen is made of frosted glass, it can blur people’s appearance, and the sliding system works the same way as the drawer, so you can decide how much you want to hide behind those screens.

When you decide to break up with someone, you may want it to happen in a public space in case the other one gets violent. However, you may also need some privacy. As a public space, the place under the bridge can maintain some privacy which is quite suitable for a breakup.

In this project, I designed a fence by slightly changing the original grids of it and put it under the bridge. The fence is cold and freezing, so the atmosphere under the bridge is totally different compared to the atmosphere outside. Meanwhile, the fence also represents the boundary between two people.

The girds are of different sizes, which allow people to return different things, for example, sweater, t-shirt, document , and also shoe box.

Negotiating is an important part of the dating process, people expect it to be safe and fair. Negotiating in this scenario happens in the street corner.

Street corner is an open space, people’s every move is monitored, so they have to be careful about their behavior. Also, most importantly, people on either side of the corner cannot see each other.

In this project, I designed a mirror and a bench in the corner for two people to communicate, the legs of the bench have springs on them, so the height can be different depending on the weight on it.

When two people sit on it together, the height of it is 450 mm which is the most comfortable height, it represents the negotiation is going well, however, if one person suddenly leaves, the other one will be bounced to 550 mm, which is an uncomfortable height, and that means the negotiation is not going smoothly.
The mirror in the corner allows people to see the reflection instead of directly seeing each other, which can guarantee the safety of both people.

Today, weddings in the forest become more and more popular, however, no matter indoors or outdoors, wedding needs to be carried out within a fixed structure. So what will a wedding in the forest be like?

Instead of building a structure to define the wedding area, I decide to use some natural elements, such as mist and light.

In this project, I designed an installation which can emit the mist, when there is sunlight, the mist will become yellowish, people can feel the mist falling down, and they will naturally step into this area.

The entire framework consists of several parts, and the mist nozzles are distributed over the circular frame at the same distance so as to emit a large amount of mist.
