Yiran Li

Yiran Li (b.1995,China) lives and works in London and Beijing. She is an artist focus on human intimacy, the subtle feelings of discomfort in everyday life.Since 2020, when self-isolation among many people has led to more domestic violence and parent-child problems in general, the topics she talks about seem to occupy people's lives more than ever before.While continuing to film at home during the quarantine, she explored how artists could do better with internet-based communication, such as multiple forms of video and interactive games.

Yiran’s practice concerned with the everyday life, intimate gesture, and time. Her initial thoughts came from uncomfortable family relationships that were based on love. I got ideas from sociology books about east Asian society and found that the unique Chinese concept of family and interpersonal relationship blurred the boundaries between people, and the attachment, hatred and control between people became strong.

Her work explores how we interpret, understand, and make sense of these events and encounters. Different cultural and family backgrounds will have different interpretations of this, so I always try to make the work convey the real feelings to the audience. People's most daily and intimate feelings, it is very emotional, very strong, but unreasonable. Her works are trying to find similar way.

Yiran’s work involves concepts of perception, reality, understanding, self-expression and language. She explored in multiple directions, some failed and others extended, growing like trees and not stopping.** More practices here!

The formation and mutual control of intimate relations between people is a process, its formation is invisible, but knowable. As the physical symbol of others, the body is closely connected with each other in the same small space, forming a complex, chaotic and compact whole.
The work consists of two parts connected by images of the body and the senses.
The game is mimicking the structure of group relationships, as the protagonist's eyes are controlled by the player with the mouse, when touching other bodies will be connected together, forming a bigger and bigger body ball, but also more and more can not be controlled by the player to move, finally when the player can not move the game reaches a stable state.
This work focus on the daily lives of individuals, and intimate relationships are often about touch and perception. How do people feel when they live as part of a blob? I want to convey the most intuitive physical and psychological feelings.

If the family were a big machine, what do you think it would produce?
Grandma said, "That must be love."
In the dictionary, love is interpreted as a very strong feeling. But "love" also means pain, which will never be defined.
The family is a machine in which everyone must join. This machine will kiss you, touch you, squeeze you, rub you, whether you want it or not.
It works day and night. Then you can see what's being produced: a giant, flesh-colored cube called the Lovely Family.
The voice in this work comes from a family gathering in my home.
